Implant Dentures

Removable dentures are replacement teeth set in a base of pink gum-colored resin and supported by a metal structure. Also called conventional dentures, they have helped millions of people but come with inherent problems like movement and discomfort. A better option for those who want a long-term, stable solution is a hybrid prosthesis that combines a full or partial denture with dental implants secured in the jawbone.

Dr. Robert Holland is a respected prosthodontist in Columbia, SC, with over 30 years of experience working with patients to find their ideal tooth replacement solution. He uses his skill and experience, advanced technology, and the highest-quality materials to deliver removable and fixed implant dentures customized for your needs.

Removable Implant Dentures

An implant-supported denture can replace all upper teeth, lower teeth, or both and is an excellent tooth replacement solution. This denture consists of 2–6 implants placed in the jaw and connected by an attachment device that clicks the dentures into place.

Dr. Holland oversees the implant-supported denture process and collaborates with a specialist colleague who places the implants expertly. It takes 3–6 months for the implants to heal and integrate with the bone, after which Dr. Holland designs, fabricates, and attaches the final prosthesis to complete your smile.

Removable implant dentures stay securely in place but can be removed easily by the patient for cleaning and oral hygiene.

Fixed Implant Dentures

The concept of a fixed-implant denture is similar to a removable implant denture, but the denture teeth are attached permanently to the implants in your jaw. The security of a fixed implant denture, also called a hybrid prosthesis, relies on its placement in the jawbone.

With this treatment, Dr. Holland works with an oral surgeon or periodontist who places 4–6 implants in the jaw. The exact number depends on the specialist’s recommendation, your dental anatomy, and the teeth we are treating. Because the lower jaw arch has greater bone density than the upper, fewer implants are typically needed to secure the denture; the bone in the upper arch is less dense, so more implants are required.

A healing period of 3–6 months follows implant placement, after which Dr. Holland takes impressions and works with you to design dentures that complement your unique smile. A fixed-implant prosthesis restores comfortable chewing function, improves speaking ability, and rejuvenates your appearance.

You may have also heard of the concept of All-on-4 dentures, which is another type of fixed implant denture that can only be removed by a dentist or prosthodontist. The implants are placed toward the front of the jaw, where the bone is the strongest. Two implants are also tilted to increase bone-to-implant contact for the greatest stability.

We attach temporary dentures to the implants the same day they are placed, so you don't have to go without teeth. After the implants heal, we replace the temporary with your final denture.
