Dental Crowns and Bridges

Cracked, broken, and missing teeth impact your smile's appearance and make it difficult to chew comfortably and speak clearly. Dr. Robert Holland often recommends crowns and bridges for his patients to restore function and deliver a beautiful smile worth sharing.

Trust Your Smile to Our Experienced Prosthodontist

As a Columbia, SC, prosthodontist with 30 years of experience, Dr. Holland's specialty involves designing, fabricating, and placing restorations to repair or replace missing or damaged teeth.

Dr. Holland and our dental team ensure that every aspect of your treatment is convenient and stress-free, and the results exceed your expectations for quality and aesthetics.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown, also known as a "cap," is custom-designed to cover the entire visible portion of a tooth down to the gumline. As a result, the crown creates a barrier to protect the tooth from further damage while restoring its original size, shape, and chewing function.

At Carolina Restorative & Implant Dentistry, our prosthodontist works with top-quality labs and premier materials like porcelain, zirconia, and gold to deliver crowns that can last decades when cared for properly.

What Problems Does a Dental Crown Treat?

Dr. Holland would typically recommend a crown for one of the following reasons:

  • Protect a decayed tooth — Sometimes decay involves so much of a tooth's structure that a filling, inlay, or onlay won't provide adequate support and protection. In this case, your dentist or prosthodontist would recommend a dental crown.
  • Support a broken or injured tooth — Dr. Holland recommends a dental crown to support its weakened structure if a tooth is cracked, broken, severely worn, or has a large filling.
  • Strengthen a root-canaled tooth — A dental crown protects a tooth weakened by root canal treatment.
  • Improve a tooth's appearance — Since dental crowns conceal the tooth beneath it, we often recommend them to improve aesthetic concerns like a broken, discolored, or poorly-shaped tooth.
  • Replace a missing tooth — A dental implant topped with a crown replaces a missing tooth, restoring your smile's function and appearance and stopping bone recession.

Dental Bridges Replace Missing Teeth

As a prosthodontist, Dr. Holland specializes in replacing missing teeth with lifelike tooth restorations like dental bridges.

A traditional bridge fills the gap when one to three consecutive teeth are missing. The bridge consists of a pontic (artificial tooth) with a crown on either side that is attached to adjacent healthy teeth for support. The number of artificial teeth needed depends on the number of missing teeth.

Implant-Supported Bridge

When replacing missing teeth, we can also create an implant-supported bridge. Instead of resting on the remaining teeth, this type of bridge relies on dental implants for support.

There are several advantages to choosing an implant-supported bridge or denture. One of the most beneficial is the conservation of healthy teeth. Another is that the implants help stimulate jawbone growth to prevent bone recession.
